“Grey’s Anatomy” did one of the rarest things on network television in its season premiere: It showed a character terminating her pregnancy.
The two-hour premiere ended with Cristina (Sandra Oh) going through with an abortion after finally having the conversation about it that she and Owen (Kevin McKidd) had been avoiding since last season’s finale. Owen dropped his steadfast position against the abortion after getting an earful from Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) on what being an unwanted child has done to her:
“Do you know what it’s like to be raised by someone who didn’t want you? I do,” she tells Owen. “… I was raised by a Cristina. My mother was a Cristina, and as the child she didn’t want, I’m telling you: Don’t do this to her because she’s kind and she cares and she won’t make it. The guilt of resenting her own kid will eat her alive.”
“Grey’s” has mined this territory to some degree before: When Cristina got pregnant by Burke (Isaiah Washington) in the show’s second season, she talked about terminating it but later discovered she had an ectopic pregnancy. But it’s exceedingly uncommon for TV characters to actually go through with it — either a complication like Cristina had the first time around makes the decision for them, or they decide to bring the baby to term.
Gut-wrenching though the decision was for Cristina, it seems in line with everything we know about her. She has long been the most single-minded character on “Grey’s Anatomy” and has always been upfront about the fact that her devotion to becoming a top-flight surgeon makes just about everything else in her life secondary.
What did you think of Cristina’s storyline in the premiere, and of the way the show handled it?
