Mark Zuckerberg was on hand to give the keynote address at the Facebook F8 Developers Conference, in which he unveiled a new profile design called “Timeline.” This new feature will make every user’s profile page a scrolling record of what the user has shared on Facebook and what has been deemed as important by that user.
“For every major evolution we’ve done at Facebook, the profile is at
the center. It’s a really personal product, and
our job is to make this product the best way for you to share
everything you want,” says Zuckerberg during his address.
He then compares the expanding profile interface as going deeper into a conversation with someone.
“We often talk
about the profile at Facebook as what you talk with someone about during
the first five minutes of talking with someone. If
the original profile was the first five minutes of a conversation, the
stream was the first 15, now I want to show you the rest,” says the Facebook founder and CEO. “Timeline is the story of your life, and it has three pieces, all your
stories, all your apps, in a new way to express who you are.”
Zuck says the Timeline fefature has been in the works for about a year and will help make Facebook more visual. You can see a sample of the Timeline profile here, which bears more than a passing resemblance to a Tumblr blog.
challenge that we had designing Timeline was figuring out a way to tell
all the important stories of your life on a single page,” says Zuckerberg. “It summarizes the past for you but allows you to add important
moments in your timeline as well.”
