Someone call Alanis Morissette and find out if this is officially ironic. Deadline Hollywood has the scoop that Mel Gibson will be collaborating with screenwriter Joe Eszterhas (“Basic Instinct,” “Flashdance“) on a Warner Bros. drama about the heroic exploits of Judah Maccabee, a legendary Jewish warrior.
The subject matter is of particular interest considering both Gibson and Eszterhas’ checkered past in relation to Jewish culture. Gibson was crucified (pun intended) for his 2006 anti-Semitic rant following his arrest for drunk driving. Eszterhas has his own baggage to contend with; his 1989 film “Music Box” was chastised by the Hungarian Parliament for exploring the massacre of Jewish Hungarians at the end of World War II.
Judah Maccabee, along with his father and four brothers, led a revolt against the conquering armies of Greece and Syria in the second century B.C. Speaking of days of yore, both Gibson and Eszterhas were once among the top paid men in their respective fields. Perhaps this is the project that can return them to their previous stature.
