FX has picked up “American Horror Story” for a second season — which could mean a whole lot more bad news for the Harmon family. Assuming they all last that long.
The show from “Glee” and “Nip/Tuck” collaborators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk has performed solidly in the ratings so far and is on track to become the most-watched debut season of any FX original drama. The cable channel has ordered 13 more episodes of the show, which will likely premiere next year.
“It’s one thing to have the ambition and guts to reinvent a genre in a way that makes it captivatingly fresh for a broad audience — it’s something else entirely to have the craft to back that ambition up,” FX president and general manager John Landgraf says. “Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have hit the trifecta with ‘Nip/Tuck,’ ‘Glee’ and now ‘American Horror Story,’ which will be scaring FX’s viewers to death for many years to come.”
(We’re assuming that the end of Landgraf’s press-release statement is just meant to convey enthusiasm for the show and not to indicate any kind of multi-year commitment.)
First-run episodes of “American Horror Story” are averaging about 3.5 million viewers so far (including DVR viewing for the first two). Maybe more important for FX is the fact that the audience seems to be growing. The show’s adults 18-49 audience has increased in each of the past two weeks and hit a series high last week; the same thing happened in the 18-34 and 25-54 demos.
