As “Castle” fans or anyone whose seen James Bond’s “Quantum of Solace”
can attest, Stana Katic is something of a head-turner. So it was really only a
matter of time before the 33-year-old actress found a part that involved
her canoodling on a French beach.

“For Lovers Only,” which has enjoyed a fruitful domestic release on
iTunes and continues to appear in many festivals abroad, was filmed over
just 12 days with only three people: Katic, co-star and writer Mark
and director Michael Polish.

The intimate circumstances made for
many happy accidents, including Katic unconsciously paying homage to
Deborah Kerr and Burt Lancaster’s famous scene in “From Here to Eternity.”

“It was a script that Mark and Michael had sitting around for awhile,”
Katic recently told Zap2it on the “Castle” set.” They had various
renditions of it that they’d been playing with for years, and then I
think the writer’s strike stifled a lot of independent film-making. So
they decided, ‘let’s just go find an actress and go make a movie. Let’s
make it like a French New Wave.'”

And the scenario was about as Nouvelle Vague as
you could imagine. Classified by the Screen Actors Guild as
“experimental film,” many passersby mistook the shoot for three people
making home movies of a vacation.

“New Wave was something that came out of creating art without a lot of
hullabaloo, finances or manpower,” says Katic. “It fit with what they
wanted to do, which was tell a story simply, break it down to the
essential parts: two people, dialogue and telling something that moves

She likens the experience to “a band of gypsies traveling around the French countryside,” and though the Polish Brothers did a fare share of
scouting, many scenes just happened out of nothing.

that came out of her tripping on the beach.
