The DVR ratings for the first full week of the fall season followed their usual pattern: Already-big shows got even bigger, and those closer to the bottom of the rankings scored big gains percentage-wise.
One thing that’s also pretty much the same is that the top of the list is dominated by veteran shows. In terms of total viewers added, no first-year series broke into the Top 10 for premiere week, and only one — FOX’s comedy “New Girl” — was among the biggest gainers in the adults 18-49 demographic.
“Modern Family” and “Two and a Half Men” scored the biggest gains in both viewers and the adults 18-49 demo in the first set of Live +7 ratings from Nielsen, which cover the week of Sept. 19-25. The two “Modern Family” episodes on Sept. 21 each added more than 4.6 million viewers to take the top two spots, and each also added better than two points in the demo.
Ashton Kutcher‘s “Men” debut, meanwhile, grew from 28.7 million to 32.8 million viewers and added 1.8 points to its 18-49 rating to finish with a 12.5. “New Girl” was tops among new shows in both viewers added (2.8 million, finishing with 13.1 million) and adults 18-49 rating growth (1.5 points, going from 4.8 to 6.3). NBC’s comedy “Up All Night” got the second-biggest 18-49 bump among new shows, adding 1.1 points to finish with a 3.5. A pair of CBS dramas, “Unforgettable” (just under 2.8 million viewers added) and “Person of Interest” (2.75 million viewers added), also scored good-sized gains.
Also of note: Both the Wednesday and Thursday editions of “The X Factor” grew by about 14 percent in viewers and 16 percent in adults 18-49. That’s a little bigger gain than what “American Idol” averaged last season — although those numbers may come down some when “The X Factor” enters the live-performance stages of its run.
Farther down the list, “Supernatural” was the biggest DVR beneficiary on The CW, growing by more than 44 percent (2 million to 2.9 million) in viewers and a whopping 62.5 percent (0.8 to 1.3) in adults 18-49.
