Rooney had gone into the hospital for an undisclosed surgery, reports the AP, and had developed major complications, passing away Friday night (Nov. 4).

“60 Minutes” colleague Steve Kroft says, “Andy always said he wanted to work until the day he died, and he managed to do it, save the last few weeks in the hospital.”

Over the course of his run on “60 Minutes,” Rooney won four Emmy Awards. He was known for not only talking about the latest news, but also making humorous observations about everything from pies to air travel.

“Worlds cannot adequately express Andy’s contribution to the world of journalism and the impact he made, as a colleague and a friend, upon everybody at CBS,” says CBS president and CEO Leslie Moonves.

Rooney was born Jan. 14, 1919 in Albany, NY. He married his wife Marguerite in 1942 and they were together 62 years until she died in 2004. They have four children together – Emily, Brian, Ellen and Martha.

Son Brian tells the AP services will be private, though it is anticipated CBS News will hold a public memorial later.
