It’s been a tough month for late night comics. First Herman Cain drops out of the Republican race amidst rumors of repeated infidelity. And now Donald Trump announces that he’s canceling the GOP debate he planned to moderate.
While the reality is the contest was likely sacked because Trump could only get two of the seven candidates to participate, Trump blamed the Republican party for sabotaging his efforts. In a video titled “Why I cancelled the ‘great debate,'” Trump explains his rationale for nixing the event.
“A lot of them aren’t coming because they think I’m going to run for political office,” Trump says. “They want me to announce that I won’t run as an independent candidate, but and I won’t do that. Because if the Republicans pick the wrong person, I would, in fact, seriously consider running.”
Trump is gracious in his respect for the two who did accept, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum. He also appreciates himself.
“Because of the fact that the Republicans are upset, and because of the fact that I refuse to give up the possibility of running as an independent candidate, I’ve decided to cancel the debate. I don’t want to waste a lot of Newt’s time, Rick Santorum’s time or Donald Trump’s time,” Trump adds.
The debate had been scheduled for Dec. 27.
