Lowe’s yanked its commercials after the Florida Family Association launched a campaign against the show because it only depicts ordinary Muslim families and no terrorist extremists — which is frankly the most ridiculous thing we’ve heard in a while, since people with a basic grasp of the English language should know that the word “extremist” implies a small, minority of a population in the first place.
The hip-hop magnate has vocally decried the company’s decision on his Twitter account, writing, “Dear @Lowes — u made a grave mistake by caving into hatred & bigotry. Do right thing, be American & embrace diversity.”
Later, he explained to his followers why he is promoting a boycott of Lowe’s, writing, “Lowes is a ‘corporate citizen’ their actions matter. No christian jewish buddhist or hindu should sit by and watch this w/out reacting.”
Lowe’s did issue an explanation in a statement, which reads, “Lowe’s has received a significant amount of communication on this program, from every perspective possible. Individuals and groups have strong political and societal views on this topic, and this program became a lighting rod for many of those views. As a result we did pull our advertising on this program. We believe it is best to respectfully defer to communities, individuals and groups to discuss and consider such issues of importance.”
Simmons promises that he puts his money where his mouth is, and contacted TLC to try to purchase the remaining ads for the program. “Just purchased remaining spots for #allamericanmuslim for next week The show is now sold out! keep your money @lowes and we will keep ours,” he wrote, but later clarified that the network may have had fewer spots than it anticipated and he might have to wait for a later episode.
