Thursday’s (Jan. 12) Critics Choice Awards attendees definitely upped the fashion ante over the previous night’s People’s Choice fashion choices. But with a smaller crowd comes a smaller winners (and losers) circle.
On the plus side (see above), Michelle Williams, who was nominated for her turn as Marilyn Monroe in “My Week with Marilyn” showed us that she’s got her own version of glam and it was in full effect on Thursday night. Williams chose a full-length black and ivory belted wrap-around satin gown. Elizabeth Olsen — yes, younger sister of those Olsens — brightened up the joint in a yellow embellished Emilio Pucci above-the-knee dress. Charlize Theron, who doesn’t make many fashion missteps, scored again in a black Azzedine Alaia gown.
The evening’s worst looks were kind of surprising. Well, not so much the looks as who was wearing them. Tilda Swinton, who is a fashion risk-taker came off as an under-dressed penguin in her menswear-inspired look. “The Help’s” Jessica Chastain chose a Balenciaga halter top that was just a little too much dress — or fabric — for her lithe frame. And we feel kind of yucky about singling out 14-year-old Chloe Grace Moretz, but this is one case in which Chanel wasn’t able to kick a**. (And, hey, she was one of our best-dressed at the People’s Choice, so we don’t feel that bad.)
