Jay Leno has been known to make uncouth jokes from time to time, but his latest foot-in-mouth moment has caused something of an international incident.
Last week on “The Tonight Show” (the week of Jan. 16), Leno was making fun of the wealth of the GOP presidential candidates and showed a photo of “Mitt Romney‘s summer home,” which was actually a holy Sikh shrine in India. Now, he’s facing both a libel lawsuit and a formal complaint from India to the State Department over the comments.
According to Deadline, Dr. Randeep Dhillon and BolPunjabi All Religions Community Organization filed a libel suit in California Jan. 24, saying the show “exposed Sikhs and their religion to hatred, contempt and ridicule because it portrayed the holiest place in the Sikh religion as a vacation resort owned by a non-Sikh.”
The offending segment is no longer on NBC.com, says Deadline. Leno has not yet commented publicly, but apparently an apology is being sought.
