We’re not sure if this is more or less icky than our story about the possibility of former George Clooney squeeze Elisabetta Canalis dating ‘Jackass’ Steve O, but it’s pretty darn gross. McDonald’s announced they’re no longer be using “pink slime”–beef
trimmings rinsed in ammonium hydroxide to kill bacteria–as an additive
in their burgers. Um … good?
The term comes from British chef Jamie Oliver who complained about its use in his TV show “Food Revolution” last year. He says, “Basically, we’re taking a product that would be sold at the cheapest form for dogs and after this process we can give it to humans.”
In agreement with Jamie Oliver, US Department of Agriculture microbiologist Geral Zirnstein says in the Daily Mail,
“I do not consider the stuff [“pink slime”] to be ground beef and I
consider allowing it in ground beef to be a form of fraudulent
labeling.” Does anyone have some tofu? Seriously.
