The pilot of “Smash” has been available on demand and for download for more than a week, and you can now stream it online as well. But if you don’t have 40-plus minutes to spare, this extended preview gives a pretty good taste of what you’ll see in NBC’s new drama.
Over seven minutes, cast members, creator Theresa Rebeck and executive producer Steven Spielberg lay out their ambitions for the show, which revolves around the creation of a Broadway musical about Marilyn Monroe. A bonus for us: Megan Hilty, who’s been getting short shrift in the on-air promos that focus heavily on Katharine McPhee, gets some more face time here.
You’ll also see and hear snippets of several production numbers from the fictional Marilyn musical, listen to Debra Messing, Jack Davenport, Anjelica Huston and other cast members wax poetic about the show and, of course, hear McPhee sing “Beautiful” (which, even though we’ve heard that about a thousand times now, is still a pretty powerful moment in the pilot).
“Smash” premieres at 10 p.m. ET Feb. 6 on NBC. You can watch the entire premiere episode here.
