Despite the fact that super-hyped film “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” has been a bit of a box office under-performer, Sony still plans to produce the sequel, according to EW. “The Girl Who Played With Fire,” based on the second book in the series, will move forward with stars Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara who are both signed on for multiple films.
“[Dragon Tattoo] continues to do strong business and nothing has changed with respect to development of the next book,” a Sony rep tells the site. Though the film has hit $60 million as of the beginning of the year, it wasn’t the box office smash that the months and months of hype the film received. There were fashion spreads with Mara’s shocking new look and a clothing line based on her costumes. The books the films were based on sold like hot cakes and the original films starring “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” star Noomi Rapace got people into foreign films like never before.
So what gives? Was it the much talked about violent rape scene that kept people away? The fact that anyone who’s read the books knows the answer to the mystery? Perhaps the fact that sitting through a film that’s 2 hours and 40 minutes long is a test of even the strongest bladder was a factor. We’d love to hear what you think. Did you see the film over the holidays? Are you looking forward to a sequel? Let us know below.
