The premiere of “Alcatraz” on FOX last month drew similar same-day ratings to its FOX counterpart “Terra Nova” in the fall — and the two shows’ DVR numbers look pretty much the same too.
The two-hour “Alcatraz” premiere on Jan. 16 grew from 10.05 million to 12.81 million viewers in the Live +7 ratings, Nielsen says, an improvement of 27.4 percent. Among adults 18-49, it went from a 3.3 rating to a 4.4, a jump of 33.3 percent.
That puts the show in pretty much the same place “Terra Nova” was when its first week of DVR ratings came in: The premiere went from 9.22 million to 12.25 viewers and a 3.1 to a 4.4 in the 18-49 demographic. “Alcatraz’s” same-day numbers have trended slightly head of “Terra Nova’s” in the past two weeks, so we’ll be curious to see how that bears out in the Live +7 numbers.
The other big premiere in the week of Jan. 16-22 was that of “American Idol,” and while the FOX show’s numbers grew by a decent amount with DVR use, it may have had an even bigger effect on one of its competitors, “Modern Family.”
“Modern Family,” which has been No. 1 for much of the season in DVR gains, grew by an even larger amount than usual opposite “Idol.” The Jan. 18 episode added 5.24 million viewers to finish with 17.13 million and 2.7 points in adults 18-49 for a final rating of 7.8. (For the season, the ABC comedy gets an average of 4.76 million viewers and 2.4 points in the demo.)
“Idol’s” Wednesday episode, meanwhile grew by a little under 2.9 million viewers (21.93 million to 24.81 million) and 1.2 demo points 7.4 to 8.6). The Thursday show added 3.16 million viewers (18.02 million to 21.18 million) and 1.3 points in the demo (5.7 to 7.0).
