The “Spartacus: Vengeance” finale airs on March 30, and as much as we want to scream “we’re not ready,” we can’t wait to see what happens. We were lucky enough to chat with star Liam McIntyre, who gave us a look at what’s coming in the finale and next season.
McIntyre was about to head off to boot camp to start training for Season 3. We asked him what they were going to do to him this time. “I don’t know what they’re going to do this year,” he says. “I know that they’re changing things, which is ominous, but I’m not sure what to expect. I get the feeling that it’s going to be harder. The good news for fans watching is that I think the focus is going to be on getting ripped even more, which is possible.” Oh, my.
McIntyre says that the cast really has no idea what’s coming, in terms of story. “I got the script for ten (the finale), and all of us were like ‘You are kidding me!’ as we turn page to page.” He says that you definitely cannot miss the first five minutes, “or you might as well not watch.”
The last time we spoke with McIntyre, we talked about the slow motion scenes. You can’t blink, or it looks like you’re napping. To fix that, his trainer took him to a firing range. “You won’t blink when you learn this,” he told McIntyre.
“I thought to myself ‘Oh, I’ve played a lot of Point Blank.’ I was like ‘Well I’m really good at video games.’ And I was really good at this, and I kept putting the target farther away and still hitting everything. And it was so scary. And I’m like ‘I just killed that guy like ten times.’
Because in Australia all of that is illegal. Like owning a gun, holding a gun, shooting a gun, yeah, you need a licenses and all kinds of things. That would never happen in Australia. So on one level it was exciting. And I got a cut from a magnum. I don’t know if that’s cool or not cool. Maybe it just means I’m too much of a spaz to be able to use it properly.”
McIntyre has been playing a game with fans on Twitter. “Who would win in a fight? Spartacus or ___?” “One of my happiest weeks on Twitter was when someone asked Spartacus
vs. someone, and then I answered the dorkiest way I could,” he says. “It started this couple of
days of Spartacus vs. Captain America, Spartacus vs. Spider-Man, Spartacus vs. Thor,
Spartacus vs. Braveheart. It even surprised me a bit that I had something relevant,
Spartacus vs. Wolverine, he’s made of adamantium so swords won’t be much good to
me. I’d fight really hard, but he’d keep fighting so I probably would lose that one.
He even told us that there are rumblings about a “Spartacus” video game. McIntyre says he’d love to voice the role for that. He’s a self-professed nerd (just another reason to love him) and told us he tried to play on the set and didn’t have time.
The cast has a blast on set. In fact, he tells us that there might even be footage of them doing a parody of “West Side Story.” We really hope that makes it to the DVD. Check out a preview of the finale below and join us in pouring out a cup of wine in honor of “Spartacus: Vengeance.”
