Around this time last year, DC Comics fans were chomping at the bit to get a look at the first photo of Adrianne Palicki as Wonder Woman for her NBC pilot. When we finally saw her in costume, the general consensus was not so great.
This season, another DC Comics favorite is coming to the small screen, this time on The CW. Stephen Amell is starring as Oliver Queen — AKA Green Arrow — in the dark, gritty pilot “Arrow.” Above, you can see the first photo released of Amell in costume for the role.
The costume has been redesigned since Justin Hartley played Oliver Queen on “Smallville.” It was tweaked by Colleen Atwood, who won Best Costume Design Oscars for her work on “Chicago,” “Memoirs of a Geisha,” and “Alice in Wonderland.”
“When I directed the pilot for ‘Smallville,’ I knew that making Clark Kent relatable would be the key to audiences believing in him as a hero,” says pilot director David Nutter. “‘Arrow’ is a different show — darker and harder-edged — but it’s the same core idea. We’re creating a real, believable world in which Oliver Queen can do incredible things. Colleen Atwood’s great work on the Arrow costume reflects that effort.”
In a recent video Q&A with fans, Amell revealed that he’s done considerable research for the role. “I did a ton of reading,” he says. “I actually got to meet Jeff Johns, who is the creative director of DC Comics, and we got to talk a little bit about comic books… that was pretty neat.”
