Taylor Swift may have taken the Grammy stage looking like she walked out a Depression-era dust bowl farm, but the 22-year-old singer has plenty of scratch.
According to Billboard magazine, Swift out-earned her music industry peers in 2011 — raking in more than $35.7 million — 17 percent more than last year’s top earner, Lady Gaga. U2 comes in second with $32 million. Rounding out the top five are Kenny Chesney ($29 million), Lady Gaga ($25 million) and Lil Wayne ($23 million).
There are a few surprises. Sade, who toured for the first time in a decade, came in sixth on the list while toast of the music world Adele came in tenth. Katy Perry, who is credited with tying Michael Jackson’s record for the amount of No. 1 singles on one album (five), came in 14th.
Kanye West, who famously interrupted Swift onstage during the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, came in at no. 39 on the list with $5.4 million in earnings.
