For his first battle on this week’s episode of “The Voice,” Cee-Lo Green chose an unlikely duo. Rocker Juliet Simms, who fans may recognize as the lead singer of Automatic Loveletter, took on folk singer Sarah Golden, whose version of Gaga’s “You and I” surprised judges at the blind auditions.
Cee-Lo chose “Stay With Me” by Rod Stewart, which seemed to give Juliet a clear advantage. “I’ve been told that I sound like a female version of Rod Stewart,” Juliet said.
Sarah wasn’t giving up, though. “Stylistically, this song fits Juliet’s persona, but I think we are so different that I stand a fighting chance,” she said. “Rod Stewart is a totally gravelly kind of guy. Juliet is a gravelly girl. I’m not going to try to upstage her.”
Babyface, Sarah’s mentor, told her not to try to change her style. “Keep it country. I think that separates you,” he said.
“I’m excited to be able to really be myself,” Sarah said.
Ne-Yo was Juliet’s mentor. “Ne-yo covers the whole spectrum of music, and so it was like all these amazing packages in one human being,” she said. He was impressed with her rocker power.
“Only thing that I would tell you is to pick your spots,” he said, advising her that her performance should grow and gain power as it went on.
“I’m a fairly confident singer but now there’s so much laying on the line that it’s nerve-wracking,” Juliet admitted.
Adam was blown away by her work in the final battle. “I remember really loving you from the beginning, Juliet, so I’m biased and I would definitely pick you,” he said.
Blake didn’t agree. “Sara was just doing so many things with harmonies,” Blake said. “It’s so versatile. I think Sara took that, personally.”
“Very interesting,” Christina mused. “Sara, you’re great, but I’m not sure whether this song did your voice justice. To me it was a no-brainer, Juliet wins.”
Of course, it was Cee-Lo’s call in the end. “This is of course a very emotional part of the show for me. Sara, killer, what’s up buddy,” he placated.”I believe that just the song choice alone was a challenge that you deserved, to showcase what range and adaptability you have. I really would prefer to have you both if I could, but if I have to make a decision, I have to go with Juliet.”
Did he make the right call?
