“Dancing With the Stars” went with its first dance duel of the season so far. A lot of fans are split on this concept. On the one hand, if you’re going to let the public vote, let them vote. On the other hand, we all know it’s more of a popularity contest than a dance contest (it happens on “Idol” and “America’s Got Talent” and all the other shows too), so letting the judges decide perhaps is more fair to the better dancers? What do you think?
Regardless, dance duels are back and this first one pitted Gavin DeGraw against Jaleel White. We were a little surprised by Jaleel – he and Kym were not the worst Monday night (April 16). But Gladys and Melissa both probably have bigger fanbases who watch this show. Gavin was not a surprise – God bless ‘im, but his dance Monday night was rough.
The way a duel works is that the two couples dance the same dance at the same time, which is apparently the way it’s done in a real ballroom competition. The decision is going to be purely based on the quality of the duel dances, not body of work. It’s all very dramatic.
With this cha-cha, it doesn’t take long to see that Jaleel is a superior dancer to Gavin. Don’t get us wrong, Gavin is a great guy. But dance-wise, Jaleel is better. The judges agree – they are unanimous in saving Jaleel and Kym.
