“Fifty Shades of Grey” has become a cultural phenomenon. This book of erotic fiction, featuring BDSM (Bondage, Discipline, Dominance and Submission) has been selling like hot cakes, and mostly to women. It’s been dubbed “mommy porn.”
Dr. Oz featured the book on his show on April 25 and had the entire audience read it and discuss the effect it had on their lives. Has this book by E.L. James already jumped the shark? First off, this assumes that women were not reading this sort of book before “Fifty Shades of Grey” hit the net as an e-book. This is simply not the case. In fact, women have been downloading erotic fiction in large numbers since the advent of e-readers allowed them to read in secret.
This sort of goes along the myth that women like sex less than men and all of the shows done about it. Why is anyone surprised? Putting this particular book in the spotlight on a show like “Dr. Oz” is just milking the trend dry. See women? There is something else you need help to figure out. Is erotic fiction for you? It might save your marriage. It might help you realize you like normal things. Yup. Shark jumped. If everyone is playing on how “shocking” a phenomenon this is, over and over again, it ceases to be shocking. It’s just another erotic novel.
