As far as TV performances of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” go, the version that most lived up to the original’s haunting, painful tone was the cover from Darren Criss and Matt Bomer on “Glee.” But Australian singer Gotye says he didn’t love the tribute.
“They did such a faithful arrangement of the instrumentals but the
vocals were that pop ‘Glee’ style — ultra dry, sounded pretty tuned and the
rock has no real sense, like it’s playing to you from a cardboard
box,” he tells Aussie newspaper The Courier-Mail.
It’s not a complete diss, but it’s no stamp of approval either.
Frankly, Gotye is just as tired of the constant covers as everyone else. He says he’s “sometimes” sick of his own song, too.
“Not so much when I sing it. I don’t always look at all of the parodies and covers that people send me. It
gets to that point where it starts to feel a bit self-conscious and I
don’t want to hear any more people doing something with this.”
