British boy band One Direction is at the center of a dispute over its name thanks to an American band which claims it formed a band using the name in 2009, before Simon Cowell put together the mega popular Brit version that is fresh off a “Saturday Night Live” appearance.
A legal rep for the U.S. band says his clients filed an application for ownership of the name with U.S. trademark authorities and that Sony Music knew this before inaugurating their own version.
One fan boiled it down like this: “One Direction USA u aren’t even famous so u should be the ones to change ur name. this argument is invalid.”
Added another, “Dear One Direction USA,we don’t hate you because you’re famous. You’re famous because we hate you. Sincerely One Direction UK & Directioners.”
