Former contestant Erin Martin ripped Cee Lo Green after being voted off “The Voice” on April 10. At the time, she claims that Green was too focused on staging her performance and not enough on her singing. Green is now talking about the matter, and he’s fighting back.
“I just think she was wrong,” Green says on Tuesday (April 24). “I think that I tried to play to her strengths.”
The point of contention was Martin’s singing of “Walk like and Egyptian,” a performance which came complete with ancient Egypt-themed apparel and back up dancers. As Martin explained, this type of staging took her “far out of [her] element.” Martin says at the time she would have fared better had she performed a song from Billie Holiday or Corinne Bailey Rae.
But Green explains that elaborate performances are not only part of his DNA but also something that makes the TV show successful.
“Anyone who watched Season 1 knows that staging is my thing. That’s what I do, that’s what I do well,” Green says. “A bare stage, that’s no fun.”
But even after a the difficult split, Green is still a fan of Martin. “I believed in her because I like quirk. I believe that quirk works,” he says.
