On Nightline to promote his new book, “The Billy Bob Tapes: A Cave Full of Ghosts,” Billy Bob Thornton talked about his 2003 divorce from Angelina Jolie and blamed his own insecurities for the failure of their marriage, saying he wasn’t “good enough” for her.
Jolie, of course, is now happily engaged to Brad Pitt — her partner of seven years and dad to her six children.
“I blew it because I didn’t think I was good enough for her,” Thornton said. “She has one way she wanted to live her life and I had another way to live mine and I was just too insecure. I did feel like the Phantom of the Opera hiding in the catacombs. People have actually said that I didn’t deserve to be with her.”
“We had a great time together,” he added. “We had a great marriage and I chickened out because I didn’t feel good enough. That’s all that happened. It was no big deal, we never hated each other.”
Thornton and Jolie met in 1996 on the set of “Pushing Tin.” They married in 2000 and made headlines for wearing lockets each other’s blood. They broke up in 2003, three months after Jolie adopted her first child, Maddox, from Cambodia.
