“Breaking Bad” will begin its final season in July, but it won’t finish until sometime in 2013.
AMC says Season 5 of the Emmy-winning series will premiere at 10 p.m. ET Sunday, July 15. As part of a renewal deal reached last year, this season will be the last one — but it will be spread out over two years. Eight episodes will air this summer, and the final eight will follow in the summer of 2013.
AMC will use the premiere of “Breaking Bad” to lead into a new unscripted series, “Small Town Security,” which premieres at 11 p.m. July 15. The show follows the exploits of a family-run private-security firm in rural Georgia. Additionally, Season 2 of “Hell on Wheels” will debut at 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12.
“Breaking Bad” is currently filming in Albuquerque, N.M. Earlier this year creator Vince Gilligan told Zap2it that knowing how many episodes are left will make it easier “to measure out Walt’s [Bryan Cranston] behavior and know where the whole thing ends. … When you have an indefinite number of episodes left, especially with a show like this where you’re charting a guy’s descent from good guy to bad guy, you lose track of where you are in the continuum of good to bad. But when you know you’ve got a finite number more, then you can have an easier time charting that progression.”
