Did Selena Gomez filch lyrics from another band? Yes, according to the band Luce, who claim Gomez and her band The Scene lifted a chorus that is “virtually identical” to one of their songs and used it in her hit “A Year Without Rain.”
Gomez is named in a $1 million lawsuit along with the co-writers of her her, Lindy Robbins and Toby Gad. Luce’s songwriting team — Tom Luce, Brian Kroll, Matt Blackett and Lawrence Riggs — claim the lyrics were lifted from their 2005 song “Buy a Dog.”
“The melodies in the chorus of both songs are virtually identical,” they write in legal documents obtained by Courthouse News Service and GossipCop. They add that the song “was a No. 1 record on several radio stations around the United States, including WRLT in Nashville and KFOG in San Francisco, at both of which it was among the 10 most played records for the entire year of 2005.”
