A lot has been said about the high level of talent in the “American Idol” Season 11 Top 5 (or 6, or 7) — but if so many people are talking about it, there must be an element of truth there. The final four singers, Hollie Cavanagh, Joshua Ledet, Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez, are no doubt fantastic at what they do — but do they deserve to be there over the most recently booted finalists, Skylar Laine, Elise Testone or Colton Dixon?
Laine had a lot going for her as a contestant — high energy, great attitude, command of the stage and the coveted position of being the lone country singer in a sea full of balladeers. Country music is a huge genre that will go untapped for the rest of the “Idol” season. Last year’s finalists were two teen country singers — so how come the charismatic Laine couldn’t make it further in the competition? And furthermore, why wasn’t she surprised to go?
She might not have had her best night singing a British tune and something from the ’60s — they’re not really in her wheelhouse, so give the gal a break — but she unquestionably performed better than Phillip Phillips, who’s managed to spend the entire season outside of the Bottom 3 (or 2, whatever they’re doing).
Cavanagh’s on an upswing, Ledet consistently gets standing ovations from the judges and Sanchez had a mediocre first song but slayed her second. Laine, on the other hand, has been consistently solid throughout the competition.
So, we pose this question: Was Laine the most deserving of elimination from the Top 5? Or should someone else have gotten the boot instead?
