This week, the “Girls” of HBO took viewers to a warehouse party in Bushwick — and it ended up being the best episode of the season.
Out of any episode of “Girls” yet, this one was arguably the most “Sex and the City”-esque. While this new cast of HBO lady-characters busy themselves by acting as “crack spirit guides,” swatting off “tiny Navajos” and tossing wine bottles on people, tonight’s scenes were (appropriately) nostalgic of Carrie Bradshaw & co. The four girls converge at the party, chime in with New York City specific wisecracks, and encounter their own adventures, hookups, and trouble.
The structure of Episode 7 was also a good formula for “Girls,” covering a single night’s events. It made the characters’ blunders and eccentricities more lovable in the context of “the best party ever.”
1. He is out of the house, wearing a shirt!
2. It’s revealed that Adam’s a recovering alcoholic, and possibly a sex addict.
3. He ends the night by (apparently) committing to be Hannah’s boyfriend. Anyone else sensing that this relationship will be even bumpier than their failed bike ride home from the party?
Just in case those weren’t enough revelations for a single 30-minute episode, Jessa’s train wreck has left the station. She unintentionally lures Jeff to the party, and bites off more than she can chew with the flirtations. Yup, as he even admits himself, he’s “that guy.” But Jessa is given a harsh lesson when her bohemian bombshell routine ends up backfiring: Jeff gets knocked out by “crusty punks,” has a shameful emotional breakdown in the hospital, and then storms off angrily when she rejects his advances. “I’m sick. I can’t do this kind of thing anymore,” Jessa says out loud.
If it seemed worrisome at the episode’s start to see Shoshanna out at a rager in the wilds of Bushwick, those instincts prove correct. She takes a puff of crack, runs around the ‘hood like a madwoman and ends up with no pants on, massaging creepstastic Ray’s inner thighs in a “nonsexual way” on the sidewalk. New couple alert? Oh, boy.
Throughout the chaos of the warehouse, Marnie’s having her own pity party. Charlie’s looking good, has a new lover at his side, and nobody — not even Hannah’s ex Elijah — wants to tune into her troubles. Finally, as Marnie’s about to rescue Hannah from Adam’s clutches, she ends up having to share an awkward cab ride home with the new couple (Marnie vs. Adam plotlines, here we go). You can’t help but understand her when she says “I am never coming back to Bushwick again — ever!”
“Girls” Gag Index: “Welcome to Bushwick a.k.a. The Crackcident”
Moment of Awesome: The intro sequence with the “Girls” logo got re-booted rave style this week.
Funniest Moment: Shoshanna smoked crack, lost her bottoms, and punched Ray. It’s about time she sheds some of that encumbering innocence!
Missed Viral Opportunity Moment: Why hasn’t HBO set up a QuestionableGoods.tv site yet?
Favorite Hannah Quote: “Last time I got drunk I ate all this brie and threw up on my cell phone.”
OMG Moment: We already mentioned, but Adam was wearing a shirt, you guys. A paisley shirt.
OMG Moment #2: Charlie’s already seeing a new girl, and as much as he deserves some vengeance on Marnie, this does not seem like the best decision-making. Although this also doesn’t make him a “sociopath” (as Marnie puts it).
