While E.L. James’ “Fifty Shades of Gray” is an erotic trilogy dominating bestseller lists and already lined up for big-screen adaptation, it is not a young adult novel about a young Lithuanian girl’s “unspeakable struggles” in Siberia.
But that’s what some readers are getting since author Ruta Sepetys newest novel is titled “Between Shades of Gray” and many copies are being sold to readers mistaking the book for James’ spanky romance.
And since both authors are currently on book tour, Sepetys tells EW that crowds are showing up at her readings expecting something completely different.
“The subject has come up at every high school and every bookstore I’ve been to,” she says, adding that James fans usually stick around and end up learning a thing or two. Sepetys also says that most of the accidental fans are men, which is interesting since E.L. James’ book has been labeled “mommy porn.”
