The tone at the 2012 Met Costume Institute Gala was relatively tame compared to last year’s fete in honor of late designer Alexander McQueen. This year’s honorees — Miuccia Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli — are both much more subtle when it comes to making a statement. But that didn’t stop some of the A-list attendees from trying to stand out from the fashion crowd.
Elizabeth Banks turned up resembling her “Hunger Games” character, Effie Trinket. She wore Mary Katrantzou and looked ready to either be popped, unwrapped or, you know, covered with a blanket. The floor-length gown featured a short peplum that seemed to burst out of her abdomen with pregnant fervor and was somewhat mirrored by a similar layer covering her shoulders and decolletage.
Also joining Banks on the worst-dressed list: Supermodel Anja Rubik who, although beautiful, took Jolie-ing a bit too far when the high slit in her dress revealed her plastic Barbie leg joint.
Mary-Kate Olsen, too, gets a mention for adding at least 50 years to her age with a high-necked drapy black-satin gown and hair that may have in fact have been found in the wreckage of the Titanic.
