In the Tuesday, May 8 Season 1 finale of “New Girl,” Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris and Hannah Simone all find themselves stuck in the middle of the desert for the night after Nick makes an unexpected detour on his way to move into his new apartment with Caroline.
They’ve got a Uhaul full of Nick’s mismatched furniture so it’s not like they’re completely roughing it, but the cast members tell Zap2it on the red carpet before a screening
of the finale episode at the TV Academy in North Hollywood that most of them aren’t big campers. “I don’t like it,” admits Deschanel. Her character, Jess, might enjoy it, though. “I think she’s probably a camper, yeah, just not Z.D.”
Greenfield isn’t much of a fan either. “I’m going to be real honest with you — the Jews, not so much into the camping,” he says. “It’s just true, and I’m one of them. You know, I don’t have any of the equipment, nor do I ever want to be in the woods. I don’t like the dirt, I don’t like when it gets in my socks, and I like sleeping in a bed with a mattress.”
Morris isn’t very outdoorsy either. “Winston camping? Hell no,” he says. “Did I say hell no? Actually me in real life —
camping: hell no! I’m afraid of unknown elements. I’m afraid of walking
around a tree and then a gorilla’s there. I don’t know if gorillas hang
out at camping sites. But they could. Lions, tigers, bears, oh my?
Sharks. Just in case sharks are hitting the land.”
Luckily, Johnson says both he and Nick are definitely outdoor people. “I think in Nick’s ideal world, he would live outside. That weird S.O.B. could spend weeks outside,” he says. “I’ve got a fire pit in my backyard, so when I’m not
doing these [events], I like sitting in my backyard making a big old fire — I’ve
got a couple of dogs, let’s get weird out there.”
Aside from their exploits under the stars — “We go on an adventure and try to save our friend from a life-ruining
decision,” Deschanel explains, adding that “you can expect a
lot of fun, a lot of nostalgia, maybe some dancing” — there will be an answer as to whether or not Nick moves out.
“Nick is very much considering moving out because he’s an idiot, but I
think it’s hard because he’s got great friends. I think Jess applies a lot
of pressure to him emotionally. There will be a decision reached,” reveals Johnson.
Nick isn’t the only one going through tough times. Schmidt and Cece hit a rough patch when they have to consider the foundation of their relationship. “He’s got a lot of issues, a lot of things going on. Some ups and downs with Cece — I think he’s more concerned with that stuff than rattlesnakes in the desert,” Greenfield says.
And his penis injury still hasn’t cleared up, making things more difficult. “It’s still really bad. He has a temporary solution, but it’s still out of use, out of commission. No sex for this guy. It’s a shame.”
Simone says that “[Schmidt and Cece] have had this very active relationship, [but the injury has] now become the gateway for the two of them to really figure out why they like to spend so much time together, or if it was just hooking up. So they’re kind of having to deal with the emotional side of the relationship. That ding dong needed to snap for us to be able to go to the next level.”
