It’s the 25th anniversary of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week extravaganza, otherwise known as the best thing ever on television ever, ever, ever, forever. The event kicked off July 17, 1988, and this year, Discovery promises to be shark-ier than ever with “specials that get you so close to the action, if you were any closer you’d be bait!”
It all begins August 12 at 9 p.m. EST. Throughout the week, you can expect to see eight new specials. 2011’s “Ultimate Air Jaws” gets a follow-up with “Air Jaws Apocalypse,” in which shark expert Chris Fallows and producer Jeff Kurr explore Seal Island, South Africa, risking their lives for a close encounter with the 14-foot great white shark known as Colossus.
In “Shark Fight,” victims of shark attacks discuss the terrifying moments of their confrontations. They’ve persevered after losing their limbs to sharks — and now, these victims have actually dedicated their lives to protecting sharks. (Seriously.)
Discovery Channel partnered with Stanford University to tag the great white sharks off the coast of California in the special “Great White Highway.” They’re looking to learn more about the sharks’ mating rituals and, in particular, where they go to give birth — still a mystery to scientists.
Other specials to look out for:
— “Sharkzilla”: Kari, Grant, and Tori from “MythBusters” test out the “chomping capabilities” of the biggest shark ever.
— “Shark Week’s 25 Best Bites”: The scariest and funniest moments over the last quarter-century of Shark Week awesomeness.
— “How ‘Jaws’ Changed the World”: Go behind the scenes of the biggest shark movie ever.
— “Adrift: 47 Days With Sharks”: Two war heroes tell the story of their 47 days in shark-infested waters… and how they lived to tell the tale.
— “MythBusters’ Jawsome Shark Special”: Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman count down the 25 best shark myths, culminating in the No. 1 myth… which will “literally blow people away,” according to the press release.
