Amber Portwood made a very interesting decision on Tuesday (June 5). The “Teen Mom” star opted for five years in prison rather than complete a drug rehab program. And now she explains the thought process that led her to this choice.
“I felt like I’d rather do my time and get it over with, and make the best out of the situation that’s been handed to me,” she continues.
The reality show star, who first emerged in the MTV series “16 and Pregnant,” pleaded guilty in February to felony possession of a controlled substance and to violating the terms of her probation. She had the option of completing rehab instead of a sentence, but in the end, that wasn’t going to work out.
“You want to be free. Who doesn’t?” she says. “But you know if you can’t do it, if you can’t do it, why are you kidding yourself?”
As for her plans when she’s behind bars, Portwood is focused on getting her life straight and getting an education.
“I’m going to take some classes, I’m going to get my GED, take as many programs as I can. You know, just try to better myself for when I do get out and not stay in prison…I’ll be off the drugs, I’ll have an education to get me a job, you have to think of the positives in this negative story,” she adds.
