The Black Keys have filed copyright infringement lawsuits against Pizza Hut and Home Depot for using their songs in ads — without permission or compensation. Federal lawsuits were filed Thursday, as the Black Keys claim Pizza Hut used their song “Gold on the Ceiling” in a commercial, and Home Depot used their song “Lonely Boy.”
Band members Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, as well as their producer Danger Mouse, are seeking damages of over $75,000 for each suit, and they want the companies to cease use of the songs. According to Yahoo the suit claims that “musical elements” of the tunes were used in the commercials (for Cheesy Bites pizza and Ryobi power tools) — no actual vocals are heard.
“We haven’t seen the complaint yet, but respect for intellectual property rights is a matter we take very seriously,” said a Home Depot spokesperson.
