If there’s one thing recent technology has taught us, it’s to be careful what you do in public — everyone has a camera in their pocket these days, and an embarrassing moment is never more than one Tweet away. Unfortunately for Team USA’s elite athletes, it’s a lesson they’re currently learning.
On Thursday, Minnesota Timberwolves power forward Kevin Love (@kevinlove) posted a picture to Twitter of his fellow basketball players asleep on their flight to the Olympics, complete with snuggle pillows, sleep masks and blankies. Tweeting “#GotEm ALL. Even Coach K. I win” he sent the photo to his more than 300,000 followers and within a few hours had received 4,693 re-tweets.
Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul may have the biggest beef with Love (well, whenever he wakes up), as he appears in the front of the photo sitting in his aisle seat, hugging a pillow in sweet slumber. New Orleans Hornets power forward Anthony Davis, meanwhile, seems to be traveling with his own enormous comforter from home and clearly has some explaining to do.
“Mr. Sandman…bring me a dream,” commented “cwayne2v,” one of many fans who weighed in on the pic.
“Is Coach flying coach?” asked “monte2h” who observed that Olympics coach Mike Krzyzewski seemed to be relegated to a cramped-leg cabin behind his players.
“Chris Paul hugging that pillow. LOL” said “blacknswazy” in the Instagram comments section.
Several commenters also noticed that Kobe Bryant somehow evaded the camera’s lens, giving rise to suspicions that he may be in cahoots with Love — or even more likely, flies in his own private plane.
The United States men’s Olympic basketball team, dubbed “The Dream Team” since active NBA players were allowed to compete beginning in 1992, competes this year with yet another all-star roster of athletes. The team consists of returning 2008 Olympic gold medal winners LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Bryant, along with Kevin Durant, Love, Tyson Chandler, Russell Westbrook, Andre Iguodala, James Harden and Anthony Davis.
Bryant has raised eyebrows with comments that this year’s team would win against the original Dream Team, which consisted of such players as Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. Perhaps, as some might say, it’s a feat the current team could only achieve in their dreams.
