At the 2012 Olympic trials, Gabby Douglas topped the favored Jordyn Wieber for the automatic bid on the U.S. women’s gymnastics team. Wieber had previously beaten Douglas at the 2012 VIsa National Champions and was leading Douglas by .3 after the first day of the women’s trials.
But on the second day of the women’s competition, Douglas bested Wieber, the reigning women’s all-around champion, by one-tenth of a point, despite having had some fairly large balance checks on her beam routine.
So Gabby Douglas is headed to the 2012 London Summer Olympics. Wieber, despite not having an automatic bid, should also join her. The remaining three spots will be determined by head coach Martha Karolyi and her selection committee. If the committee went strictly by the way the women finished at the trials, it would go Douglas, Wieber, Aly Raisman, Elizabeth Price and Kyla Ross.
Douglas had this to say after her win, “I just give all the glory to God, he’s just blessed me so much. I’m so excited and honored to do my duties in London for Team USA.”
