To kick off the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, “Today’s” Savannah Guthrie (with a cameo by Ryan Seacrest) spoke with the women’s gymnastics team, made up of Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Kyla Ross — a.k.a. the Fab Five.
“It feels amazing. It’s still so surreal to be here. We’ve been working so hard. I’m just so proud. All these girls are my best friends,” says Raisman.
The Fab Five are heavily favored to win the team gold medal, which the U.S. has only done in 1996, when Kerri Strug hit her infamous one-footed vault to clinch the title. It does put added pressure on the girls in 2012.
“Living up to that expectation of winning the gold, it’s going to be hard work,” says Wieber. “But the main thing we have to remember is to go out there and hit our routines.”
“We dreamed about going to the Olympics,” says Ross, who has been training with Wieber since they were little girls. “We never thought it would come true … It’s crazy that we both made it.”
