With his mother by his side, Big Sean made giant waves at the BET Awards Sunday night (July 1), opening the ceremony with Kanye West and the G.O.O.D Music family and taking home the award for Best New Artist.
The 24-year-old rapper tells Zap2It, he’s “feeling good about life,” and has mom to thank for the ongoing journey.
“She raised me right,” remarks Big Sean on the red carpet for the awards. “She has great intentions, she instilled an unbreakable faith in me as a young’n, you know what I’m saying? It really is a lot of what I am today, and who I’m gonna be in the future. She’s beautiful.”
Led by Yeezy at full throttle, Big Sean and West performed alongside 2 Chainz and Pusha T, beginning the night with their latest single, “Mercy,” followed by West on two solo tracks, “Cold,” and “New God Flow.” The G.O.O.D. Music crew’s first full-length album as a unit, “Cruel Summer,” is set to be released August 7.
Big Sean also has a second solo LP in the works, which he says will be coming out some time in October.
“As I grow, and get bigger and bigger as an artist, I want to make music that can influence; I want to leave a legacy behind,” he says. “So, it’s really gonna be some music that people are going to be inspired by. I’m still gonna have some bangers on there too. But it’s gonna be good. And this G.O.O.D music album is really gonna help me launch into it.”
Additionally, the Detroit-raised, ‘swerve’ minded emcee currently has a feature on Justin Bieber‘s new song “As Long As You Love Me, which the two recently performed on “The Today Show.” It was then, says Big Sean, that Bieber hinted his interest in one of the rapper’s favorite luxury items.
“The first ring I got made was a Rolex ring. You know the Rolex rings, like Pac and all them used to wear?” He comments. “I got one recreated a little bit bigger, with more diamonds in it. It was the first piece of jewelry I bought, one of the first rings I purchased.”
“When I went to the studio with Bieber for the first time, he was admiring it,” he continues. “And then later, [when] we performed, he saw [another] ring and was like, ‘Man, that ring is cool, but where’s that Rolex ring that you had? And I was like, ‘You really liked that huh?’…So I just took it out of my bag and gave it to him as a gift to surprise him.”
