On Monday (July 16), British rocker Jon Lord — who played keyboards for Deep Purple, among other bands — died from a pulmonary embolism after a long battle with pancreatic cancer, reports MSNBC. He was 71.
The musician’s official website says Lord was “surrounded by his loving family” at the time of his death.
Born in Leicester, England, Lord moved to London at age 19 to attend drama school. After playing with a series of bands, he was a founding member of Deep Purple and co-wrote one of the band’s biggest hits, “Smoke on the Water.” He also played with several other bands including Whitesnake, Paice, Athon and Lord, the Artwoods and Flowerpot Men.
Lord retired from Deep Purple in 2002.
