A woman is suing Justin Bieber for more than $9 million, alleging that she suffered hearing loss following one of his concerts.
In the suit, Stacey Wilson Betts claims that she has suffered loss of hearing, severe tinnitus (ringing in her ears) and a hypersensitivity to sound since she took her daughter to a Bieber concert in July 2012. She’s asking for a total of $9.2 million in damages. Bieber’s record label, Island Def Jam, and the concert promoter are also named as defendants, E! Online reports.
Betts says that during the show, Bieber got into “a heart shaped, aluminum/steel gondola” that traveled over the crowd. As he moved over the fans, he created a “wave like effect of screaming” as he exhorted thousands of girls to make some noise, the suit alleges.
The screaming and the sound waves bouncing off the gondola created what Betts calls “a sound blast” that damaged her ears, the suit states. The gondola also constituted an “unforeseen aspect” of the show that amped up the sound beyond what would be expected at a concert.
Bieber’s camp has not commented on the lawsuit.
