“Magic Mike” fans may have noticed that one of the film’s stars looks a little less beefcake-y than he appeared in the movie. Matthew McConaughey is slimming down, reportedly dropping up to 30 pounds to play a man who contracts the HIV virus.
In the movie, McConaughey plays real life cowboy Ron Woodruff, who smuggles life-saving drugs across the border after contracting the illness.
“I’m losing some weight,” McConaughey tells Larry King’s “Ora” Web series. “I’ve got a role coming up in the middle of September. I’ve lost about 15 pounds, I’ve gotta lose about 15 more. I should not look healthy by the time I’m doing (filming) this.”
“It’s a bit of a spiritual cleanse, mental cleanse,” he adds. “Drinking a lot of tea. It takes a while for your body to understand that it has to feed off of itself and that you’re not going to give it something else from the outside.”
