In a new interview with Out, U.S. women’s soccer player Megan Rapinoe, 27, ready to represent Team USA for the 2012 London Summer Olympics, has decided to publicly come out of the closet and discuss her current relationship.
“I feel like sports in general are still homophobic, in the sense that not a lot of people are out. I feel everyone is really craving [for] people to come out. People want — they need — to see that there are people like me playing soccer for the good ol’ U.S. of A,” says Rapinoe.
Rapinoe has never hidden her sexual orientation, but no one has ever asked her point-blank about it.
“I think they were trying to be respectful and that it’s my job to say, ‘I’m gay.’ Which I am. For the record: I am gay,” says Rapinoe. She also says her current girlfriend is an Australian soccer player, whom she has been seeing for three years.
“In female sports, if you’re gay, most likely your team knows it pretty quickly. It’s very open and widely supported. For males, it’s not that way at all. It’s sad,” she adds.
