The new format of “So You Think You Can Dance” is a little incongruous in that dancers who give amazing performances can end up in the bottom six just minutes later for a bum performance they gave a week ago. So it was kind of shocking when Eliana, who delivered the strongest performance of the night — along with partner Cyrus — ended up there. Luckily, the judges saved her to dance another week, instead sending Amber and Brandon home.
The lovely and dance-smart Christina Applegate joined the judges’ panel for this show — the last before a two-week Olympic hiatus (not sure why since the Olympics will be carried on NBC, but anyway). The best thing about Applegate is that unlike some other celebrity guest judges she neither pretends to know everything about dance nor turns each opportunity to talk into a punchline.
“On the parts that were slow, soupier,” she says when trying to describe what was lacking in Tiffany and George’s NappyTabs hip-hop routine. “Can we make that a thing?”
The best routine of the night came at the end when Eliana and Cyrus danced a lyrical and moving hip-hop routine from NappyTabs that earned them a standing ovation from the crowd and the judges.
Amber’s exit from the show won’t be a popular decision, but get used to it. This season features the strongest dancers seen on the show and there will be no easy exits from this point on.
Okay, until Aug. 15. In the meantime, tell us what you think about this week’s eliminations.
