“So You Think You Can Dance” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe spoke with the press at the Television Critics Association panel Monday morning (July 23), talking about the Season 9 changes, particularly the show moving to two winners.
“I have no idea really why we never did that in the first place,” says Lythgoe. “It just makes so much sense because guys do dance more athletically than girls. Having said that, the girls nowadays are just stunning. They’re warriors.”
Lythgoe also addresses a different tactic the judges took with Season 9, in picking dancers who maybe aren’t able to excel within every genre.
“I think we became very brave this year with where we were. We said OK, we’re not just going to take dancers this season who we believe can take everything we throw at them,” says Lythgoe. “They will be great in the genre they’re great in … the idea was they have gotta be fantastic and outstanding in what they do. I think that’s given us a lot more diversity, makes it a lot more interesting for us.”
“So You Think You Can Dance” airs Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
