When Mindy Kaling signed a deal to create her own show, FOX’s “The Mindy Project,” fans of her character on “The Office” had to wonder what would become of Kelly Kapoor. At the Television Critics Association press tour on Monday in Los Angeles, Kaling confirmed that she would be returning to “The Office” to give Kelly Kapoor an exit strategy.
“I’m headed back, I think I’m going to be in the premiere which I’m really excited about, and maybe another episode,” she tells the press. “That was great. I got so attached to that character, even though I got maybe a line every episode, it’s fun to see what’s going to happen to Kelly.”
When asked whether fans of “The Office” will enjoy “The Mindy Project,” Kaling laughs. “We’re hoping for a larger [audience] like, prison inmates and the elderly,” she says.
“Places where the TV is just on,” adds showrunner Matt Warburton.
More seriously, Kaling says, “I’m hoping that people who read my book, mostly women, will follow me along on this and see me have more of a platform and a bigger cast.”
