On Wednesday, Michael Phelps collected his record 19th Olympic medal, becoming the most-decorated Olympian of all time. On Thursday, he hit the pool for the 200 IM and beat his own record when he got that 20th medal. So what color was it?
Gold! Michael Phelps beat teammate Ryan Lochte in the individual medley, snagging his 16th gold medal in swimming. Though he didn’t beat the world record, Phelps won the race by a solid margin. Lochte came in second, with Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh taking the bronze medal.
It’s the final Phelps vs. Lochte duel of the 2012 summer games, and with Phelps retiring after this year’s competition, it puts to bed a long-standing rivalry. It also helped Phelps to enter the exclusive club of Olympic swimmers to win the same event at three consecutive Olympics. He’s the only male swimmer ever to achieve this feat, with two female swimmers having done it.
After the race, Phelps immediately hit the warm-down pool to prep for his next event, the 100m Butterfly.
