Last summer’s “Amazing Spider-Man” starring Andrew Garfield and directed by Marc Webb wasn’t as big at the box office as Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” trilogy with Tobey Maguire. But it was still a hit, and Sony was so confident that it would be that they had already set a release date for the sequel before the movie even opened.
Now the studio is confirming Garfield will return to the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Webb will be back in the director’s chair for that sequel. There’s no official word yet on Emma Stone reprising her role as love interest Gwen Stacy, although the actress is expected to return.
“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (or whatever they decide to call it) is due to begin filming early next year for a May 2, 2014 release. The script was written by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci (of “Hawaii 5-0” and “Star Trek”) and Jeff Pinkner (“Fringe”).
“We could not be more confident in the direction we are taking this new Spider-Man storyline and we are tremendously excited to be ramping up production again with Marc at the helm and Andrew continuing on as Peter Parker. We can’t wait to share what we have in store for Peter and Spider-Man with audiences worldwide,” Columbia Pictures president Doug Belgrad says in a statement accompanying the announcement.
