If 10 consecutive Emmy wins for “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” seems like a lot to you, think of how Stewart feels having to give a speech every single year for a decade now.
Clearly, though, he isn’t bored. When Ricky Gervais announced “Daily” won again at this year’s ceremony, Stewart headed toward the stage and was immediately tackled by category rivals Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert. He wrestled with them in the aisle before breaking free and stumbling to the stage. “I’m not in the kind of shape I should be in to do a bit with Jimmy Fallon, who’s in very good shape,” Stewart joked when he reached the mic. “Son of a bitch!”
“The Daily Show” already held the record for most wins in the Emmy’s Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series category, and this year extended its lead a little further. “We make topical comedy, which has the shelf life of egg salad,” Stewart acknowledged in the speech. “Nobody cares after five days. So to do this for 15 years and to have tangible proof that what we made wasn’t just ephemeral is wonderful.”
But if Stewart was concerned about offending Emmy voters, he didn’t show it in his closing remarks: “Years from now … when aliens visit, they will find a box of these [Emmys] and they will know just how predictable these f—— things are.”
Host Jimmy Kimmel picked up on the gag later in the show, claiming: “A minute ago I saw [Stewart] throw his Emmy out, into the garbage! Something to remember when voting next year!” Kimmel in 2013, anyone?
