Actress Kathy Bates has revealed that in recent weeks, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy.
“After much consideration, I underwent a double mastectomy. Luckily, I don’t have to
undergo radiation or chemo. My family call me Kat because I always land
on my feet and thankfully this is no exception,” the 64-year-old actress tells People.
This is not Bates’ first battle with cancer. She survived ovarian cancer nine years ago and this time around she doesn’t see why it should be any different.
“My doctors have assured me I’m going to be around for a long time. I’m looking forward to getting back to work doing what I love to do,” says Bates.
Look for her at the 64th annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 23, as she has earned two nominations — Outstanding Actress in a Drama for “Harry’s Law” and Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy for “Two and a Half Men.”
UPDATE: Bates has addressed her cancer and surgery on Twitter, writing, “Hey All, sorry for the long silence. I was diagnosed with breast cancer 2
months ago & am recovering from a double mastectomy.
I don’t miss my breasts as much as I miss Harry’s Law. ;-) Thanks for all the sweet tweets. Y’all kept me going.”
